Elijah and Depression
While he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, Lord," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors." -

One day, according to an old fable the devil decided to sell some of his well-worn tools. On display were some treacherous instruments, including hatred, jealousy, lying and pride. Set apart from the rest was a harmless-looking device with a very high price tag. "What's this?" someone asked. "That's discouragement," Satan replied. It's one of my most effective tools. With it I can pry open the hearts of God's greatest servants and bring on depression."
That tool certainly worked in Elijah's case. He had just slain the wicked prophets of Baal. When he prayed earnestly God sent rain after three and a half years of drought. These great victories left Elijah physically and emotionally drained, and therefore he was vulnerable to discouragement.
Dear friends, however, God took steps to restore Elijah's ebbing strength. First, He let him catch up on his sleep. Then, He provided nourishment to give him energy. Finally, God gave him a new vision of His power. Let us learn from Elijah's experience. Don't let the devil defeat us through discouragement that can lead to depression.
When the devil would oppress you,
Bringing doubt and anxious case,
God's strong arm can lift and save you
From depression's subtle snare.
