I was facing yet another major surgery, this time on my stomach. I was apprehensive as any of us would be. So I asked my doctor, half-jokingly, "Has anyone ever died during this kind of surgery?" Without batting an eye, he said, "Yes, my partner did." I was stunned. But my doctor, though blunt and perhaps tactless, was speaking the truth and being realistic. People do die, even during routine surgeries. We can be thankful that the numbers are few compared to old times. But no matter what happens, God is still in control.
Jesus did not promise His followers a life free from trouble. In this fallen world, Christian and non-Christians alike face the risks of accidents, fall sick, and lose their life's savings. God doesn't give His children exemptions from life's tragedies and setbacks. That's what Job ultimately learned through all his troubles. He came to realize that God accomplishes His purposes in ways we cannot fully comprehend. Yet He keeps every promise He has made to us, no matter how removed He may seem to be from our suffering.
Dear friends, like Job, are we willing to let God be God? Why not simply trust Him?
God does not shield us from the pain
That sin has spread throughout the race;
For if He did, how could we know
His matchless wisdom, love and grace?
