God's purpose in saving us is not simply to keep us from going to hell, but that Christ may be formed in us (Galatians 4:19). The moment we accept Him as our Savior, the process begins. From then on, God uses all of life's circumstances to make us 'conformed to the image of His son.' (Romans 8:29). This is especially true of those dark periods of testing and trial.
For a time period I had worked in a photo studio and I have seen the photographers spent hours in the darkroom which made the difference between a mediocre picture and a superior one. The pictures were taken in the studio, where the subject was indelibly impressed on the sensitive film. But that was just the beginning. The film then had to undergo the careful process of development, which required darkness, the right temperatures, special chemicals, and time. Only through this procedure could the impression on the film be 'brought out' and printed. Similarly, at the moment of salvation, a permanent 'impression' of the Savior is made in our heart. But it takes a lifetime with many trials and testing for His image to be developed in us.
Dear friends, let's thank God for the 'darkroom' that He uses to make us 'perfect and complete, lacking nothing' (James 1:4).
Our God works to transform us
Till life on earth is done;
He uses trials and testing
To make us like His Son.
