Moses became angry with the Israelites because of their continual grumbling. So instead of speaking to the rock as God had commanded, he struck it. In spite of this, the Lord caused water to gush forth, but He told Moses that this single act of disobedience would keep him out of the promise land.
When I first heard this story as a girl, I thought, "That's not fair! What a severe punishment for such a small matter?" As I grew older, however, I began to see how important it is to obey in small matters. I remember a boy in our neighborhood who had been told to stay away from an old junked car. But he did not listen. One day he unscrewed the gas cap, lit a match, and threw it into the tank. The explosion permanently damaged his sight.
Dear friends, let's look back to our life. Have we in our daily life taken a look at a pornographic magazine, gone out with an unsaved person and take a drink. Small matters, isn't it? All our teenage curiosity seems natural. What harm can come from our date and a drink with a decent appearing person? A look at indecent pictures can lead us to do something we will always regret. A seemingly harmless date and a single drink can be the first step toward alcoholism, an illicit affair or a bad marriage. No sin is harmless. Small matters of disobedience can bring on big bad consequences.
"Little sins, like leaven,
Work their evil through;
They soon pervade the loaf,
Touching all we do?"
