With the vision from Holy Spirit, we, Mathew Zachariah and my wife Sarah Mathew started
Proskaleo Ministries in the year 2006 as a ministry to bring disciples to Jesus Christ. We work
among the masses in South India and also among the online community through this website.
We are blessed with two children Joel and Joshua.
Our Testimony
Dr. Mathew K. Zachariah B.Sc. M.A. Ph.D. : I was born as a twin to my parents in Kerala, one of the southern states of India who brought me up according to the strict orthodox Christian traditions. At the age of twelve, some kind of sickness started to show its evil face in me. My hands and legs used to get numb and I would get severe headache which continued for two to three hours followed by vomiting. After that, the sickness would subside to turn up again in a few weeks. My parents consulted many doctors who prescribed lots of medicines but none could heal my strange sickness. The diagnosis varied from being due to climatic factors, allergy to certain food to rheumatism. I used to visit all the churches with the hope of getting healed.
At the age of eighteen, my sickness grew worse which affected my pre-university exams. The next year, my mother passed away due to liver cancer. I was very attached to my mother and loved her most in my family. Her death at my young age raised a big question mark on the purpose of my life. I started to think why I should live anymore with the painful sickness. It drove me twice to commit suicide. To avoid my mother's memory at home, I left to Rajasthan in the year 1979, a northern state of India seeking a job. The sickness was still there in me. In my loneliness, I started reading the Book of Psalms from the Bible every day.
One day in December 1979, I opened my Bible and my eyes went to verses 1 John 4:8 "God is Love". That word struck my heart and made me feel that there is a heavenly Father who loves me more than any one in this world. Then I started reading the Gospel of Mark and found that Jesus healed everyone who came to Him. I surrendered my life to Jesus and accepted Him as my personal Saviour and I prayed, "Jesus, if You heal me right now, I will live for You and do Your ministry in my life".
After that; days, weeks and months passed by and to my surprise the sickness never returned. I was healed. I understood that the day I committed my life to the Lord, He healed me completely. This happened at the age of twenty one. I resigned my job to be in full time ministry to fulfill the purpose of God's plan in my life. Its past twenty seven years walking with the Lord and to this day, I've been showered by His blessings of good health.
Dr. Sarah Mathew M.A. Ph.D. : I was born and brought up in a very staunch C.S.I. Christian family. Though we had family prayers and bible readings at home, attended church services and also a member of church choir, yet there was no meaning in my life. Yes, we all knew there is a Christ who was born the Christmas day, was crucified on Good Friday and risen on Easter but all this never brought any meaning to me until when I was eighteen years old and we started to have prayer meetings at home. There were lots of people who came for the meeting and shared their experiences with the Lord in their life. This continued for some time until one day on March 12th 1984, after the meeting was over and we gathered for the usual family prayer, I prayed, "Jesus, if You are the Saviour please reveal Yourself to me". At that moment I could see the heavens open and the pierced hands and a voice telling me, "I have loved you with an everlasting love" ( Jeremiah 31:3 ). This specific bible verse was revealed to me and I knew it was the Jesus the Saviour whom I was seeking. At that very moment I surrendered my life and accepted Jesus as my personal Saviour and Lord. I felt a great chage in my life, a great burden of sin taken away and a new peace filled me.
During my college days, I witnessed this Lord to my friends; they teased me a lot but this never brought any change in me; I was stronger in the Lord. Before completing my degree course in Hindi Vidhwan, I got married to a born again, committed person and was blessed with my first son whom we named Joel.
At dawn on October 28th 1985, I woke with a pat. Thinking it to be my husband, I woke him up but it was not him. I slept again to be woken up by the same pat and a voice speaking the verse Mathew 28:19-20 and repeating "I am with you Always" thrice. It was this vision from God that called us out to serve the Lord in full time ministry. Though there were lots of opposition from all sides, we were strong in the Lord's calling and stepped forward on December 1986 to serve the Lord in full faith and spirit at Kasargod, a town in northern Kerala, India. We worked among the Hindus and Muslims of that region for two years. It was at this time that we were blessed with our second son, Joshua, in 1988. We were then called to join the Indian Evangelical Mission (IEM) in 1989.
God allowed us to work with IEM for eighteen years at different locations in southern India. Through IEM, God used us to work with various Christian denominations by conducting Bible classes, counseling, personal evangelism and giving awareness of missions to Churches.
During these times we did face several strains, problems, sickness, abuses, humiliation, financial debts etc. But the Lord who called us is faithful and still meets all our needs miraculously. In the recent times, the Lord has given us a great burden to start this new venture of "Discipleship" and today we are here with Proskaleo Ministries, serving Him as His whole purpose and plan.
